OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens, Strengthening Safety and Learning Guidance for Teenagers.

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot designed specifically for younger users. The launch comes as concerns continue to grow around how AI tools affect teenagers, particularly in areas such as mental well-being, exposure to unsafe content, and misuse in schoolwork. In response, OpenAI is adding stronger age-based protections and new features intended to encourage healthier, more educational use.

A stronger focus on learning rather than answer-giving

At the center of the new teen-oriented experience is a Study Mode built to support learning. Instead of simply producing direct answers, the feature uses guided prompts and step-by-step assistance to help users work through material and understand concepts more clearly.

The goal is to shift the chatbot’s role from shortcut provider to learning companion. If the system detects that a user may be trying to use AI to complete homework outright, it can display a reminder and encourage them to switch into Study Mode instead.

OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens will also include additional education-focused tools, including:

• Learning visualizations

• Options for parents or guardians to set Study Mode as the default

Default protections for younger users

Safety is another major part of the rollout. OpenAI says age-appropriate protections will be turned on by default for teen users, with the aim of reducing the likelihood of harmful or unsuitable content appearing in their interactions.

According to the company, these safeguards are based on its principles for users under 18 and were shaped with input from developmental science and expert guidance. The broader idea is to make the default experience more suitable for younger audiences rather than relying entirely on manual settings.

More tools for parents and guardians

OpenAI is also building in family management features so adults can play a more active role in how teens use the service. Parent and guardian controls will include the ability to:

• Set quiet hours

These additions are meant to give families more visibility and control, especially as AI tools become more common in everyday study and communication.

Launched amid growing scrutiny of AI safety

The release of ChatGPT for Teens arrives at a time when public debate around AI safety is intensifying. Since ChatGPT first launched in late 2022, the platform has expanded rapidly, reaching 900 million weekly users.

Alongside the teen-focused version, OpenAI also announced a partnership with CodeAI aimed at helping young people understand the basics of artificial intelligence, including how it works, how to question it, and how to use it responsibly.

The company has also rolled out a ChatGPT teacher edition, giving schools a more structured way to access and support AI in educational settings.
