xAI Reports Massive $6.4B Loss as SpaceX IPO Filing Reveals Musk's AI Financials
SpaceX's IPO filing exposes xAI's staggering $6.4 billion operational loss in 2025 on $3.2 billion revenue, revealing Elon Musk's ambitious yet expensive AI strategy as he scales Grok toward 'multiple trillions of parameters' despite limited user adoption.

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture xAI reported a staggering $6.4 billion operational loss in 2025 on just $3.2 billion in revenue, according to newly revealed SpaceX IPO filings that provide the first public glimpse into the company's financials.
The dramatic increase in losses represents a sharp deterioration from 2024, when xAI recorded a $1.56 billion loss on $2.62 billion in revenue. The widening gap between earnings and expenses signals Musk's continued heavy investment in his AI ambitions despite questionable returns.
Massive Capital Expenditures Signal Continued Growth Plans
The financial data, disclosed as part of Musk's decision to merge xAI with SpaceX for the IPO process, reveals aggressive expansion plans for the Grok AI model. SpaceX intends to scale Grok to "multiple trillions of parameters," a dramatic enhancement that will require substantial additional computing resources and capital expenditure.
Capital spending for the AI segment has accelerated rapidly, climbing from $12.7 billion in 2025 to $7.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone. This translates to an annualized capital expenditure run rate of approximately $30.8 billion, representing more than a doubling from the previous year.
Limited User Adoption Despite Heavy Investment
Despite the massive financial commitment, user adoption remains relatively modest. As of March 2026, SpaceX reported 117 million monthly active users for Grok AI features out of 550 million total monthly active users across both Grok and X (formerly Twitter). This suggests that only about one-fifth of the combined ecosystem actively engages with Grok AI features.
Revenue Streams and Competitive Pressure
The revenue growth from 2024 to 2025 came primarily from "AI solutions and infrastructure revenue" totaling $465 million, which includes $365 million in X and Grok subscription revenue and $88 million in data licensing. An additional $116 million came from advertising.
Musk's AI venture faces intense competitive pressure, particularly from Anthropic, which reportedly expects a 130% revenue jump to $10.9 billion in the second quarter, potentially achieving its first operating profit as xAI continues burning billions.
