Strategic Expansion and Market Context
AirTrunk’s aggressive expansion follows its recent entry into the Indian market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra. The company is positioning itself to capitalize on India’s rapidly growing demand for cloud and AI computing power. According to Bernstein, India’s total data center capacity is projected to surge from approximately 1.5GW today to as much as 8GW by 2030, driven by domestic digital adoption and multinational tech firms seeking alternative hubs for AI training and inference.
Government Incentives and Regional Development
The investment aligns closely with New Delhi’s strategic push to establish India as a premier destination for AI infrastructure. Earlier this year, the Indian government introduced tax exemptions through 2047 for foreign cloud providers that run overseas workloads from Indian data centers. Maharashtra state officials recently confirmed a letter of intent for land allotment at the Raigad Pen Growth Center, where AirTrunk plans to develop a 3GW facility representing roughly ₹2 trillion ($21 billion) of the total commitment. Additionally, the operator maintains an active development pipeline of approximately 600MW across key tech hubs including Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
