OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has offered a notably cautious view on a question that often accompanies excitement around artificial intelligence: will AI actually reduce how much people work?
Speaking on the Relentless podcast, Altman suggested that the answer is likely no for most people. In his view, the limiting factor is not whether the technology becomes powerful enough. The bigger issue is human behavior. When productivity rises, people do not simply stop and enjoy more free time. Instead, they tend to raise their ambitions, compete harder, and expect more from themselves and others.
Why Altman doubts AI will lead to shorter workweeks
Altman pointed to a familiar promise from the tech world: that major advances in technology would eventually give people far more leisure. He acknowledged that, compared with earlier periods in history, modern life does include more convenience and often a better overall standard of living. Even so, the long-imagined future of dramatically reduced labor has not truly arrived.
That gap between promise and reality is central to his argument. Society has repeatedly heard versions of the idea that progress would unlock a much lighter workload, yet expectations such as an ultra-short workweek never became the norm. For Altman, there is little reason to assume AI will suddenly reverse that pattern.
Higher productivity may bring higher demands, not more rest
At the heart of Altman’s position is a simple but uncomfortable observation: people rarely settle once they become more capable. If AI allows individuals and organizations to do more in less time, the likely response is not to scale back effort. It is to pursue additional goals, produce more, and push for stronger advantages.
As Altman framed it, people always want more. They look for new things to build, new value to create, and new ways to compete.
Under that logic, efficiency gains do not automatically become leisure. They are often absorbed by rising standards. What once counted as exceptional output may quickly become the baseline, and the time saved by technology can end up being reinvested into new work rather than reclaimed as personal time.
In a superintelligent future, people may become even busier
Altman extended that idea beyond today’s AI tools to a much more advanced future. If a superintelligent era arrives, he believes people may become busier rather than less occupied. Complaints about workload would probably remain, but he suggested that the experience might also come with a deeper sense of fulfillment.
His view is that greater technological capability could pull humanity into a denser environment of creation, ambition, and rivalry. In other words, AI may not function as the final solution to labor reduction. Instead, it could reshape work by increasing the pace and intensity of what people attempt to achieve.
AI as a force that changes work, not removes it
Altman’s remarks stand out because they challenge one of the most appealing narratives around AI adoption. Rather than treating artificial intelligence as a tool that naturally translates into less work, he presents it as a force that may redraw the boundaries of work altogether.
From this perspective, the future is not necessarily one of widespread idleness enabled by machines. It may be a future where human effort is redirected, expectations continue climbing, and people remain deeply engaged—perhaps even more than before.
