The updated timeline suggests Apple has chosen to slow development rather than rush the product to market. Earlier plans reportedly pointed to an announcement later this year and a release in early 2027, but that schedule has now slipped as the company continues refining both the hardware experience and the privacy framework around it.
Apple appears to be prioritizing polish over speed
From what has been reported so far, Apple is taking a cautious approach with this category. Smart glasses are not just another gadget launch: they sit directly at the intersection of wearable computing, AI, and always-present sensors, which makes user comfort and public trust especially important.

Several design paths are reportedly under consideration

removing the camera entirely and focusing on AI interactions, audio playback, and calling functions;

These ideas could also connect with Apple’s broader visual intelligence ambitions across other devices. The report indicates that the company may be developing this thinking alongside iPhone-based visual AI features and future AirPods concepts that could also include cameras.
More visible privacy safeguards may be part of the package
On the privacy front, Apple may introduce a combination of software and hardware protections. One possibility mentioned in the report is a recording indicator similar to what rivals have adopted, alongside other new mechanisms intended to make the device’s behavior easier to understand.
This would align with Apple’s longstanding privacy-first positioning: offer advanced AI capabilities while limiting how much sensitive data is collected or exposed in the process.
